Date of visit - April 2013
My friend recently told me that a new ramen place had just opened up it was good... wait but, that's not it, it was doing HALF PRICE for 1 month (April) on all ramen. At the time she told me about it I wasn't that interested, not too sure why tho. A couple of days went on and it popped back into my head and I asked her the name of the restaurant as I was planning on going with my friend who loves Japanese culture.
We had arranged to meet after work and it turns out he couldn't make it. I quickly asked my other friend who told me about this place as she noted she wanted to try it too.. it turned out she was planning on going with her boyfriend. It was the last day for the half price ramen too, so I was determined not to miss out, so I told my boyfriend to come with me.
After work I called my friend and she told me there was a massive queue but luckily she was near the front so I had to speed walk it from Covent to Soho, luckily I got there right on time as they were at the front.

The place was buzzing and it looked as if they tried to squeeze everyone in if they could i.e. being at the end of the table. It was like Oriental City as everyone inside were Oriental!

Upon arrival, the place was filled left right and center although the restaurant was small, it is a pop up restaurant until their main store opens, which is in fact next door.

Salt, sesame oil, ginger, garlic and not too sure what the bottom right veg was, it tasted like sweet pickle

Love the wet wipes they give you, which brings you back to a nostalgic past.

Fresh strawberry calpico £3.50 - Nice and refreshing

Matcha £2.90

Char siu tonkotsu

It was a tad spicy for me, I usually like mine mild but, wouldn't say I can eat a lot of spice. Couldn't actually finish this.

Matcha Mocci £3.50 - Quite pricey for one mocci

This was queue after we had finished our meal at 20:30
Overall, it was a nice experience to try Tonkotsu noodles, the broth is rich in taste and def time has been put into brewing the soup. I like my soup neutral and easy to take in? if that makes sense. I still enjoyed it however, my boyfriend was not a fan as he could not finish it as the broth flavour was too strong. I would still come back to Shoryu but it may not be on top of my list to go eat places.. I will give it another try and not go for the spicy broth!
Food 3.5/5
Price 4/5
Atmosphere 3/5
Staff 3.5/5
The price was a great deal as the ramen were all half price but, with drinks and dessert it easily came up to £30 for two people. The atmosphere was buzzing with noise but, that is not a problem. What I liked about the place was that even though it was crowded they had baskets on the floor for you to put your bag and coat/jacket. The staff were nice but, nothing special, the main waiter (a Japanese mid 30s guy) not sure if he is the owner? was very on point and I could tell he was bussing his sweat off!
Def visit Shoryu if you don't mind strong flavoured broths as that is what Tonkotsu ramen is all about! If you like suttle flavours, it may not be the place for you.
FROM 5-19TH JULY 2013 THEY ARE DOING 50% OFF ON ALL RAMEN IN THEIR SOHO STORE FOR THEIR GRAND OPENING!
